THIS IS NTA IN BRIEF

 The Nigerian Television Authority, (NTA) is the National Television Network, for the people of Nigeria. Its key function is to provide as a public service in the interest of Nigeria, independent and impartial television broadcasting for general reception. No other television station in Nigeria is charged with the same social responsibility of public interest broadcasting. Accordingly, the NTA seeks to serve as a tool for national integration.

CORPORATE STRUCTURE

The Director General is the Chief Executive Officer; he is assisted by a team of Executive Directors in charge of Programmes, Engineering, Training and Capacity Building, Marketing, News, DG’s office and Finance & Administration. The Director General and the Executive Directors constitute the Board of Management responsible for the day to day running of the Authority. They are also members of the Board of Director together with a Part time Chairman and seven Members. NTA has 101 stations located across the country. Presently NTA has operational 10 Network up-link Centres and Abuja as Headquarters. They include:

 Each Network Centre is headed by a Zonal Director, who is charged with the responsibility of overseeing all other stations within his zone e.g. state capital and local government stations

 

NTA HEADQUARTERS

As a result of the movement of the Country’s Federal Capital from Lagos to Abuja, all government and private establishments were mandated to move their corporate headquarters to Abuja.

 

Consequently, the NTA relocated its Headquarters to Abuja in October 1996. Within the Abuja premises are the International Building including the International Studios, TV Mast, Domsat Station, News Studio, Editing Suites, Master Control Room, Post Production Studios, News Room, Administrative Blocks, Multipurpose Hall, The NTA Arena, well- manicured gardens,  rest areas (hut) and NTA Plus Administrative Building. The permanent Headquarters adjacent to this premise is near completion.

 

DIRECTOR GENERAL’S OFFICE

Programmes are broadcast in either the following ways:

Syndicated

Local Stations.

There are programmes usually designed to take care of local and diverse interests of each station or state.

 

NTA Stations are located across Nigeria. For its broadcast, the Authority utilizes a huge network of transmitters located nationwide.

 

NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL BROADCAST

NTA is now on International Broadcast, transmitting to USA, Canada and Europe.  As the Largest Network in Africa, NTA now serves as the medium for the African Continent to tell the African story. It is the first black African Television Network to undertake mass broadcast globally. NTA’s transmission features Black content especially Nigerian Productions which have already made huge impact on the black population. The Authority’s programming has started to re-enforce the enthusiasm the blacks in Diaspora have for Nigeria and African Culture, while countering the negative perceptions of the black race.

 

To receive NTA’s signals viewers in Washington DC, USA, can receive NTA signals on MHz TV and COMCAST Cable and in addition via Satellite on INTELSAT America – 5 (1. A -5). The rest in the USA and Canada can receive NTA via satellite on INTELSAT America – 5 (I.A-5). In Europe NTA can be received via Satellite INTELSAT 95.

 

 

LIVE BROADCAST

As a result of NTA’s Network Linkage system, events and programmes can now be covered live from any part of Nigeria and beyond. The entire country is on television.

 

In 2006 NTA covered live several International events. These included:

The swearing in of the Liberian President – First African Woman President,  Eileen Johnson-Sirleaf

African Union Summit in Sudan.

NTA also covered the Extra-Ordinary AU Summit in Accra Ghana.

Swearing in of the President of Benin Republic 

An International Economic summit in London.

NTA Lecture series in Europe and America

NTA was commissioned by the Chinese Government to cover the visit of Chinese Premier to Southern Africa

 

MAJOR SPORTS COVERAGES

NTA was the Host Broadcaster of Nigerian’99 – FIFA Youth Championship.

NTA was also the Host Broadcaster for Nigeria/ Ghana CAF Nations Cup in 2000.

NTA was the Host Broadcaster for COJA All African Games 2003.

 

NTA transmits its Network Programmes and News on Intelsat 907 at 332.5 Degree East. The Network transmission is digital on Transponder 105/105 RHCPTX. The transmission parameters are:

            Symbol Rate                                                     5.632ms/s

            FEC                                                                             ¾

Mod scheme                                                    QPSK

 

Polarization is left hand circular polarization.

 

It also transmits its international on Intelsat 907 on transponder 23/23 LHCPTX with the following parameters.

            FEC                                                                             ¾

Also for network coverage of events there are two spare space segments used by the zones for contribution to network programmes and special events on network transmission.

 

The authority has 10 uplink zonal centers across the country and has outside broadcast and DSNG vans for the coverage of events outside the headquarters.

 

All these facilities are also manned by well trained and competent hands.

 

 

OB UNIT

This Unit is also being managed by Engineers and support services personnel e.g. Drivers, Riggers etc and their function is to cover events from different destinations for onward transmission via the Domsat to viewers.

STUDIO

1.         The Studio is where recordings/transmission of News/Programmes are done with the following equipment:  professional cameras, studio camera control unit, teleprompter sound craft, audio console, video mixer, studio light of various wattage and  microphones/ (table & neck mics)

 

2.         The studio complex comprises of Engineering/production unit being manned by Engineers and production officers

 

3.         The final out-put from the studio goes through the master control room (MCR) to Domsat for onward transmission to various destinations, having been converted from video signal to TVRF Signal.

 

MCR

This Unit is the heart of every NTA station where all the transmission of the station is handled by both Engineers and Transmission Director (TD).

 

These personnel co-ordinate the transmission by monitoring various sources of signals from all NTA Stations and follows strictly the daily transmission programme logs as scheduled with time frame.

 

The signal output of MCR also goes through Domsat earth station equipment to be converted as TV RF signal for the viewers.

 

TELEPROMPTER

This is auto script equipment used for reading Scripts for News and Programmes. The equipment comprises of a computer system monitor and a hood that is attached to the head of the camera.

 

TRANSMISSION PROCESS.

All these information/details given above forms the whole process of television path and transmission of NTA stations.

 

QUALITY OF RECEPTION

With the aid of Television Receive Only Systems (TVROS) and decoders now strategically located in all the Stations, the reception of NTA’s signal is excellent

 

 

HUMAN RESOURCE

NTA has over 4000 workforce [1]made up of highly trained professionals in all aspects of television broadcasting. The Directorate of Training and Capacity Building actively trains and retrains staff. NTA Television College, Jos, is now a Degree Awarding Institution, affiliated to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State.

 

Other units of NTA include 2 Limited Liability Companies:

Each is administered by a Managing Director as the Chief Executive.
